There are many carvings in the chapel including the seals of Hobart College and the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester on the front walls near the altar, as well as carvings depicting special events in the history of the Colleges. These include the granting of the College provisional charter in 1822; Elizabeth Blackwell's graduation in 1849; establishment of Phi Beta Kappa in 1871; the first intercollegiate lacrosse game in 1898 (Hobart beat Cornell); and winning the "G.E. College Bowl" game program in 1961. There are also many memorial plaques. Today, St. John's Chapel serves the campus as a center for religious and spiritual life. The chaplain is an Episcopal priest who is available to all members of the Colleges' community, regardless of religious background or affiliation. |
