Museum’s Lock Up & Jail ‘em a Success

The Wayne County Historical Society’s Museum of Wayne County History had a successful fundraising afternoon on Friday April 18. The Lock Up & Jail ‘em fundraiser raised $10,000 in three hours and pledges are still coming in.

This is the second year that the museum has held The Lock Up & Jail ‘em, where Wayne County detainees are picked up from their place of business or home at Friday at 3:30 and have three hours to raise $500 each for the Museum of Wayne County History.

“It looked like so much fun last year, even I participated this year,” said Executive Director Larry Ann Evans who went on to say, “Although it was looking pretty dire by 5:30, by 6:15 I had $500 in pledges!”

Again this year the detainees came from various towns in the county, some were new and some returning from last year.

“Superintendent James Hoffman is a real supporter of our fundraising events,” said Evans. “He’s everywhere, I don’t know how he finds the time!”

Evans said that some people came in with some pledges already in hand and others started from scratch. “Mike James came in, sat down, powered up his laptop and didn’t stop calling until every line on the page had a name, address and pledge on it. Amazing.”

James was given the “Key to the Jail” for raising the most pledges during the three hours. “There were quite a few this year who went over and above the $500 mark,” said Evans.

Wives and significant others also came to cheer their partners on. Valerie VanStean was there to see if Lyons Trustee Terry VanStean was going to get out of jail and Walworth Town Historian, Gene Bavis had a cheering section too.

When the calling got tough, the detainees were soothed by two massage therapists, Paula Goodell from Springs of Clifton and Annette Locner from Healing Hands.

“Everyone was wonderful, it was a very successful event,” said Evans.

The full list of detainees were: Williamson Supervisor James Hoffman, Steve Felker from Meade Maloy Agency in Clyde, Luke Dobbins from Dobbins Painting and Contracting in Lyons, Bob Schick and C.J. Britt from the Lyons National Bank, Barb Viola from Community Bank, Mike James from Jamko Industrial Services in Newark and Lyons, Gene Bavis from Bavis Associates from Walworth, Terry VanStean from the Lyons Village Board, Anne Salerno from Yellow Barn Farms, Michael Gorman from Monroe Title Agency and the board and staff of the Wayne County Historical Society.

Museum’s 2nd Lock Up & Jail ‘em

The Wayne County Historical Society’s Museum of Wayne County History is about ready to officially lock up Wayne County VIP’s for the second year in a row for the Lock Up & Jail ‘em fundraiser. The Lock Up & Jail ‘em takes place on April 18, when detainees will be picked up from their place of business or home at about 3:30 and have three hours to raise $500 each for the Museum of Wayne County History.

“Last year our detainees helped us raise almost $12,000. It was just incredible,” said Executive Director Larry Ann Evans who went on to say that she hope the same amount will be made this year.

Again this year the detainees come from various towns in the county, some are new and some returning from last year.

“The Lyons National Bank is very supportive of all our fundraising and Bob Schick and C.J. Britt will be rolling up their sleeves and making calls from the jail this year,” said Evans.

Some of the returning detainees are Williamson Supervisor James Hoffman, Steve Felker from Meade Maloy Agency in Clyde, Rus Jeffrey from WACK Radio in Newark and Luke Dobbins from Dobbins Painting and Contracting in Lyons. New detainees include Barb Viola from Community Bank, Mike James from Jamko Industrial Services in Newark and Lyons, Gene Bavis from Bavis Associates from Walworth, Terry Vanstean from the Lyons Village Board and Scott Simmons from EDS in Rochester among others.

“We, of course, will wine and dine the detainees and the massage room will be open again when the phone calls become stressful!” said Evans with a smile. “Krista Ingerick from the Springs of Clifton will be sending over one of her message therapists again and Annette Lockner from Healing Hands Message Therapy is also coming back.”

“We’ve had lots of luck with donations,” said Evans, “Everyone who donated last year is on board again this year, like  BJ’s in Geneva, Wegmans & the P&C in Newark, Loson’s in Lyons and Heluva Good Cheese in Sodus.”

Various liquor stores also donated wine for the Lock Up & Jail ‘em, such as Lyons Liquor Store, Hansel’s Liquor in Palmyra, Cedar Ridge in Macedon and Wolcott Liquor and Wine. “Some even try to find a wine that goes with the theme, like Graceland Cellars Jailhouse Rock Merlot, that was donated last year.”

“It’s a fun time for all and of course for a great cause!” exclaimed Evans
